Umphrey's Time Signatures
« on: November 09, 2010, 06:14:41 PM »

I know UM has a few songs with non-standard time signatures, Andy's Last Beer is the only one I can think of right now. Are there any others? And what time is ALB in?

I figured this was the best sub to ask.

There are too many to name really.  Most of their songs with odd meters actually move through different time signatures throughout the song (Eat, ALB, 2nd Self, 1348, WBG to name a few).  As for ALB I'm guessing you're asking about the breakdown/solos, which repeat two measures of 4/4, one measure of 2/4, and one measure of 7/8.

Cemetary Walk (I+II), All Thing Ninja, and Much Obliged all have odd-metered sections.

A good chunk if not the majority of UM's stuff has some very cool odd bars here and there.  Its part of why I love this band so much!

yeah pretty much all of them.  That is usually a standard definition in progressive rock, the use of odd meters/time sigs.

JaJunk starts in 7/4 then goes to 4/4, then switches to 9/4  :o

I think one of the weirdest of theirs I've worked on for guitar is the 2nd Self Interlude.  The first part repeats a measure of 11/16, a measure of 10/16, and two measures of 9/16.  Then it goes 2 10/16, 1 4/4, 2 10/16, 8 4/4, 1 5/4, 1 7/4, 1 4/4, 1 5/4, 1 6/4, 1 4/4, 1 3/4.

This is part of why I love Myers so much.
I honestly barely think about all of this when I'm learning their stuff on guitar, but listening to his drumming over the odd bars just makes me really appreciate it

I think Myers is under praised outside of UM circles. He's the epitome of power and control. How often are jams in an unorthodox time signature?

out of order

I don't even know how to explain that one. I just know how to play it.

same with parts of 2nd self, prowler, and a few others

but I've never met an Umphrey's song I couldn't play.

Damn.  I was listening to that the other day and decided that's the next one on deck to learn.  It ain't gonna be easy...

out of order

My old band covered OoO.  GodDAMN it took so long to learn that middle part, we actually had to alter it a bit to make it a little easier, and even then we couldn't get it to sound full enough.  DBK also has some serious shennanigans going on.

I've never tried to learn 2nd Self or OoO but now I think i have to.
DBK is a lot of fun on guitar but there are definitely some weird breaks and things

From my McNES Prowler outro, during the lick directly following 'lick balls' -
5/4, 9/8, 5/4(2 bars), 4/4, 3/4, then 4/4 til the end except the last measure, which is 6/4(or 4/4 then 2/4 if you like).

believe this was a reference to part of Go To Hell (about a minute from the end on the studio version)

could it be the end of Room to Breathe? I'm not listening to it right now so I can't confirm, just a thought

The crooked one is in a time signature that I am too drunk to try to comprehend.

What is/are the time signature(s) of All Things Ninja?

In general it's one bar of 4/4 and then one bar of 7/8 (so essentially every two bars they skip half a beat)

Anybody ever figure out the middle of Jajunk, that always leads to the jams? Seems like Kris is in 4 and the guitars are maybe in 6?
