Favorite Section/Part of Umphrey's songs
« on: September 07, 2010, 11:59:51 AM »

We all know we have favorite songs that we love to hear, but what about favorite distinct sections or parts of umphrey's songs.  I know off the top of my head I can name some sections in certain umphrey's songs that I just absolutely love, without necessarily loving whole song, or that song being your favorite song.  This def has to do with their "lego-like" ideology of pasting parts of songs together.  Here are mine:

Divisions - Jake's solo after the first interlude/drum break and they come back in after the pounding on E.  My favorite umphreys section by far.  The backing rhythm and melody is so "driving" and the Jake just is able to expand on that.

Hurt Bird Bath - the best part of the song, where Jake and Brendan are grooving their little pull offs and joel is climaxing on the synth.  amazing.

do share yours!

The intro to Bridgeless has to be my favorite. The energy always gets the crowd going.

-The groove they drop into after the odd meter section after the first vocal section in Hangover.
-The groove they drop into in Tribute to Spinal Shaft after the first few solos. (I believe they stole this from a Zappa jam, circa 1978)
-The opening riffs to 40's, and the groove they drop into right before they drop the vox

Too many more to name.

This got me thinking about the Barrymore shows from '06.

Off the top of my head:

-The funky little breakdown in OoO
-The climax in Peeps
-The high energy part with lots of piano toward the beginning of Utopian Fir.

The section I'm listening to right now.

Besides that, I love the crescendo of Morning Song. And pretty much any Dump City>Jimmy Stewart.

- Buildup intro of N2F. I just love that shit cause you know when that main riff drops, you just can't stop dancing. And then there's Jake's solo...and the eminent return to N2F.
- The return to the middle and end section of HBB. There is just so much energy building up through the jams and then it just comes to a head during those two composed parts.
- Those first couple notes of OB. I love the intro how it just builds and builds and builds. The NYE 09 Billy was just great; Waful killed those lights.
- All of Glory
- End of Divisions
- Second verse in Haji and Jake's outro solo
- Buildup in Partyin' Peeps to the end
- Professor Wormbog

Basically, just too many to name, but I tried to name a few.

the peak in HBB is hard to top, especially when they rip it like Atlanta this last run around.
A lot of great mentions in this thread.
I love the groove they get after the verses of Much Obliged.  Just gets your booty shaking.
Wife Soup's piano peak gets to such a crescendo---good call
Jake's 2nd solo (on the rare occasions they actually play it) in Crooked One might be my all time favorite Jake moment
The opening crash into Front Porch
The crescendo in Great American
All of Utopian

Love the bluegrass breakdown in phil's farm.

towards the end of plunger during the part where bb's vocals come back in.

Whenever they come back to the main riff of n2f.

Jake and joel duel during last man swerving.

The very beggining of og haunts. The way jake and brendan sort of bounce notes upward off of eachother just as the vocals come in.

Slacker Intro

Both of these. That Walletsworth is the best one I've seen to date.
