I think its more that the band is actively trying to make Miami Virtue and Domino Theory jam vehicles. I don't know if either one would have lent themselves to improvisation particularly well had they not made this choice.

Love the DBS album, but Domino Theory is the only song I really can't get into. I love the sound in the verses, but I guess I'm not much into the chorus. The jam in the encore was great though.

After relistening, this show is still pretty darn unimpressive, IMO.  Ringo and WTWIRD has good jams, but everything else gets aborted before it ever has a chance to get off the ground.  Good times, but very average show.  Whoever wrote the setlist has no concept of flow.

There are a lot of really solid jams in this show and great segues....

wtwird
ringo
HBB
FF
Domino

the Divisons > Day Nurse as well as the MO > Divisions were also excellent segments.....I think this show is in the top 3 this year.

This.

Listening to the HBB right now, loooooooooooove that first jam. Funk ftw!

The wtwird is just nasty, the drop out of the jam and back into the end of the song is seamless. Great lil transition there.

Domino Theory's jam is solid, doesn't hold up as well on tape as expected, but solid nonetheless.

One of my best friends and his new lady-friend came down to this show from Chicago. He seems to be getting back into UM after a long hiatus from them. He stopped seeing them in 05, and has seen a few shows in the past year or two with me, but I think this show really has him convinced that this band is IT! Love when that happens!

I agree, i had a blast at this one. and i had a similar experience with a friend of mine.  I'm pretty sure he only came down for it because it was his 21 Bday weekend and wanted to be with all of his friends, but he walked away with a totally different attitude than he's had as of late.  his hiatus was not nearly since 05,  more lik just July. But prior to his decision to go to this he has been firm on the stance that he will NOT spend money on UM. And this kid is a stubborn, straight Bisconaut. But after sunday he has what seem to be a renewed perspective and it seemed lik hes down to GITV once again.

It's really crazy seeing all these positive reviews.  I felt like that second set was one of the most boring and disjointed sets of UM I have ever seen.  Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I agree with you on that point. It just didn't seem to flow at all for me that night either. The transitions from song to song were pretty smooth, but the setlist just wasn't cohesive as a whole. Don't get me wrong- I danced my ass off and had an awesome night (despite my friends being assholes) but it was definitely my least favorite of the Canopy shows I've been to to date.

I agree as well. I enjoyed the first set more than the second and I missed the first two songs. Although I loved the Beatles cover. Encore left a sour taste in my mouth

^ blashphemy!

Hahaha, different strokes for sure. Aside from Bloomington and Lexington last year, this show was better than the other 13 shows I saw last year. Out of 90 shows, I'd say its in my top half for sure.

Standard and boring Divisions > Day Nurse with no improv, cover with no improv, 13 minutes HBB, that they never allowed to get off the ground, followed by  FF that they abandoned too quickly to go into Go To Hell which just flat out didn't fit the mood of the set, at all.  Much Obliged was solid, but once again, they let it fizzle out way too quickly so they could hurry up and finish Divisions.  I love Domino Theory, but they totally rushed the encore as well, and it ended up feeling forced.  Lol, smite away, but for me, that show was nothing special, at all, and I really don't even see what could be considered special about it, other than the Ringo and WTWIRD.  It's not like I'm jaded or anything.  If you're friends with me on facebook, you would know I'm probably one of the biggest UM fluffers around, but just thought the boys really missed the boat on this one.

I just think you can't get into the mindset that unless a jam is super-extended, it is bad.  Divisions had a nice little build-up type I jam, HBB had two short but sweet jams.  FF jam was good IMO and it was a seamless transition into Go to Hell, IMO.  Of course I would've liked it if they broke open HBB or MO but oh well, still pretty enjoyable.  Domino had a nice bounceback so I really enjoyed the encore.  A pretty average-ish set but by no means bad.

First set was top shelf, for me, so I think that kind of tilts this show to the level "pretty darn good" for me.  Jams in Ringo, Snucka, WtWiRD, Domino were certainly worth the price of admission for me.  That and the fact that the band really is playing so well that even the standard bits sounded particularly good to me.

Wow.

The first set alone makes this show "above-average", and the HBB is pretty damn good.

HBB was ok, just nothing exciting. FF was easily the highlight of the second set. just didnt work for me. it was standard-great, but not that exciting. i think its a case of the midwest bias.

Didn't mean to offend ya cryan, I respect your opinion. I understand what you're saying, but respectfully disagree.

On a related note, I think people have these expectations for HBB when it starts that if it doesn't have 2 huge jams and clock in around 20 min, its worthless, which is ridiculous because so many UM jams that clock in around 20 min have multiple minutes wasted by noodling around and being 'patient'. I actually thought the first jam in HBB was awesome. I liked how it deviated from the song structure a lot and how it was straight funky. They seemed to get right into it instead of wasting 2-3 minutes meandering around being 'patient' and taking their time, which seems to happen a lot w/their jams. Aside from RtB, the first set was worth the price of admission alone.

^ no worries, you didn't offend me.  i love talking UM.  i met you very briefly outside before the show.  i was with spazbird in the smoking area when you guys were all walking in.  i still had a blast at the show, im not saying i didn't.  i just try really hard to separate the fun from the actual music.  i didnt think much of it at the time, and after relistening it just kinda confirmed it for me.  as far as HBB, i just flat out get bored by that song now.  i use to love it so much back in 05-08, but it just consistently produces boring jams now, IMO, and is a set eater.  divisons is also one of my least favorite songs, and i seem to see it all the time, and it never produces anything even remotely interesting or exciting for my personal taste, so divisions second set opener just instantly put a bad taste in my mouth.

Quick chime in: While I did enjoy the show, and never look a Couch Tour in the mouth, I do not think the Canopy compared to other recent shows. I had some friends who were either new to UM or giving them another go 'round, and I found myself defending the show just a little. Offering up other dates as an alternative. It just didn't seem to have the fire and focus as others in 2012.

When the World was great, imo, as was the Ringo. I remember a nice jam in the MO. And FF was interesting (but I prefer 2004 versions). But other than that . . .

For sure, I remember meetin ya! I felt that way about HBB, and still do. 08-present, the song has been boringAF. However, I did really enjoy this one, mostly cuz of that first jam. Divisions is another one of those songs that doesn't really do much on an improv level, but that really doesn't bother me anymore, I just love the song. The real set eater in this is the RtB. How long til this is gone? Not a single person by me enjoyed the song. Its awful. Get RtB outta here!

I thoroughly enjoyed my first Canopy Club show. I've been goin to shows with very Low expectations the last year so I have nothin to complain about. All I wanted to hear goin in was Day Nurse so I was a happy camper. Thanks to Dave and Mary for lettin me GITV with you guys. Spazbird, uncledutchman, wizardburialwalk and the rest of the Murphy's crew, great meeting you. And it was awesome to see ya again Mr. Sellers!

cryan, I've felt the same way about HBB for awhile now, but have you heard the 2/3 First Ave version?  With that one and the Canopy version (which I really enjoyed live and sounds great on tape IMO),  I think (and hope) the song is making a comeback.

Good seeing you as well, DUKE! Good times in that second set

1st set left me full and content
2nd set and encore left me hungry for a lot more
I really thought they were going to blow the doors off the Canopy.
Oh well.
I guess I'm done with this band

There's some great stuff from this show. However, I hate to say it, but I was a bit underwhelmed by this show. I guess I was just expecting a complete throwdown, which was not the case. I agree with everyone saying that the flow was off. Ringo and WTWIRD were quite good, but I agree that a lot of the improv felt like it was cut short before it could really peak. I feel like MO could've really gone places, but was cut short.

Overall,  I still enjoyed the show and was happy to catch my first Crooked One, but I was expecting a bit more from this show.

even though i hyped the fuck out of this show, I still went into it with little to no expectations other than to have a good time and sweat my ass off dancing; both of which I did. Going into a show with any other type of mindset will inevitably lead to being let down. I do my best to enjoy every UM show for what it is, and not what it wasnt. (not saying that others here dont, just commenting on the overall feel of all the people talking about being let down by this show)

There'll be better shows this year, there already have been; but remember, there will also be worse shows too.

well put, jackson.  although i really hope it can't get much worse than that.  second set was the least impressive set of UM i have seen since NYE 09 set 2, and all of Muncie.

Edit: I forgot I went to North Coast in 2010, that was worse, so I stand corrected.
