04/05/2008 - The Pageant, St. Louis, MO
« on: February 03, 2012, 04:06:55 PM »

Set One
Resolution > White Man's Moccasins, Morning Song, Much Obliged* > Padgett's Profile, Little Wing$
Set Two
In the Kitchen -> Higgins > In the Kitchen, Out of Order > Gulf Stream, Black Hole Sun$$, 40's Theme
Encore
JaJunk**
Notes
this show was simulcast via iClips.net
* with Born on the Bayou teases
$ first time played, Jimi Hendrix; with Ryan's cousin ("RG") replacing Jake on guitar
$$ first time played, Soundgarden; with Kris on lead vocals
** with America the Beautiful tease

Exactly a year after another heater Pageant show. Great video from this out there on Iclips. Kris Meyer's Bday show. Great Reso. HUGE Much Obliged. Kitchen jam is nice and holds what sounds like the origins of Booth Love. Jajunk gets some nice treatment in the encore slot as well.

the kitchen sandwich and the jajunk encore are really the only parts of this show that are worth listening to repeated times.

especially the jajunk. one of the best encores ever.

This is hands down one of the best UM shows I've ever heard.  It's fucking incredible all the way through.  AMAZING Resolution.  The first jam is exactly what the a first Reso jam should be.  Soaring, uplifting stuff.  Perfect guitar tones.  Insane Much Obliged with nice wah-wah jam from Jake ->  Best Padgett's I've ever heard.  Even though there's like a half-measure fuck up during the transition, the segue is very, very cool.  If you haven't heard that jam, it's impossible to describe.  You'll just have to listen for yourself.  If anyone knows what spastic ink is (look it up on youtube), that's actually what it sounds like.

ITK > Higgins > ITK is legendary.  During the segue into Higgins (another actual segue), they play that Higgins riff in a lower key and it's SO FUCKING HEAVY.  And then you've obviously got the original Booth Love jam.

And the motherfucking JAJUNK.  I still have yet to see a better version.  I don't think I've heard one on tape either.  There's a certain point where Bayliss gets this look of disbelief on his face like, "Are you kidding me?!  FUCK YES!"

So, yeah, I would give this UM show an A+.  Five out of five stars.

Never understood the hype for this one.  Maybe the 3rd best show of that month. Not even in the same ballpark as 4/3.

I agree that it's not in the same ballpark as 4/3, but it was still a solid show.  Good times were had, and that Jajunk fucking raged. Plus we got Soundgardened.  Black Hole Sun, brah!!

I think 12/30/10(even with the flub) and 5/28/11 are better.

4-5-08 > 5-28-11 > 12-29-09 > 12-30-10

7-19-07 is somewhere in there too. i'm not sure where to put it though because it's not as much of a dance party as the others (still a fucking rager though).

those are the 5 best jajunks ever.

If you don't understand the hype for this show I'm just going to assume you haven't actually gotten around to hearing it yet.

And this Jajunk is LEAGUES better than 12/29/09, or SummerCamp '11, IMO

I was there.  If you don't understand how this was par for the course in April '08, I'm just going to assume you haven't actually gotten around to hearing the shows from April '08 yet.

It's subjective, but you are neglecting the best years of this band if you really believe those are the top 5

I agree with what you are saying about the Pageant show. I was there, and it doesn't hold a candle to most of April, and is no where near top 10 of 2008, at least in my opinion.  I really don't understand the hype for it either.  Once again, I had a blast, but other than the Jajunk and the Kitchen/Higgens segment, there isn't really anything to write home about.

I disagree with your top Jajunk's tho.  It is all subjective, but I personally prefer the 5 that mitten_smeller listed, to the 3 that you listed.  Different strokes.  FWIW, I have listened to all of the Jajunk's that have been listed on this page numerous times, and they are all top notch, but yea, I prefer the first 5.

You should go back and listen to the Padgett's.  It really is fucking incredible.  Some of the heaviest, most telepathic jamming I've heard from UM.  I actually didn't think much of this show either until I downloaded it a couple years later and actually listened to it on tape.  And the Resolution is beautiful.

this is a nice contradiction right here...

and for my tastes, yes, the 5 i listed are the cream of the crop. funkadelic dance parties with locomotive freight train peaks FTW.

Subjective,  as I mentioned.  I'm partial to 03-07, so those are some off the top of my head that were my favorites.  Seems nobody pays due respect to that era much anymore.  I stopped regularly seeing this band in 2008.

And if were going to follow the presumptuous attitude in this thread, the only contradiction I've seen in this exchange is the juxtaposition of the phrases "cream of the crop" and "funkadelic dance party".

i like to dance. sorry if you don't.

and those years you mentioned get plenty of love. there's just a bunch of people on here that started seeing UM in like 2010.

the summerfest 05 jajunk is nasty though. i'll give you that.

I started seeing them in '05, my favorite tour is Fall '06, and I started losing interest in early 2008.  But I honestly don't understand how anyone could have negative things to say about this one.  It has so many stand-out jams.  They simply kill it all the way through.
