Umphrey's @ Bonnaroo
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:56:26 PM »

Was stumbling around bonnaroo's page and in the artists section, I find this...

Umphrey's Playing Bonnaroo?

I don't think this has officially been announced, has it?  Or do they just include all artists that have played in the past?

If so... :rawk:

EDIT: Well, it appears they don't actually REMOVE bands and the link I searched for was probably the same for 2010, soo...maybe not official.

Still, what prompted me to search in the first place was a couple of rumorish tweets I saw on twitter, so I'll change the discussion to...

Who wants to see UM come back to Bonnaroo?

phish is doing bannaroo again? If they were it would not matter because I would never consider this festival and have not been interested in going since it blew up around 06/07...

i said the same thing after '04 and '05.  then a buddy hooked it up with ph tickets for the fox show in st louis so we did a nice little run (knox>roo>stl).  although bonaroo is the peak of corporate bullshit in many ways and pales in comparison to cooler fests like summercamp, i still had a great freaking time.

Bonnaroo pales in comparison to summercamp?  That's just silly dude.  Also, I would say Lolla is the peak of corporate bullshit, with their stages being named by corporate sponsors.  Say what you will, but Bonnaroo is probably the best festival out there (besides Coachella if you're into indie stuff.)

Bonnaroo gets a lot of hate (size, heat, etc) but I had an absolute blast when I went and hope to go back this summer.

I know it's a difference of opinion, but I'd do b-roo in a heartbeat over camp (and I went to camp last summer and had a blast.)

I couldnt think of two bands I would want more to see than these two at the same festival. I guess if you added Phish to the bill it would probably be my all-star line up.

I went to the first 4 bonnaroos... 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005... I liked them in decreasing order....
I then went back for a 5th time in 2009 when Phish was there...  ofcourse it is always fun, but its just too large, too many people, venues (even the tents) are so packed...

just not my thing anymore.  It would take a lot to get me back there.  UM, tool, radiohead, phish ... still not enough.

the biggest factor in why i think roo pales in comparison to scamp is the lack of music fans.  camp is awesome bc it feels like everyone there is on this shared mission - to get the fuck down.  roo is more of about sketchballs selling bunk droogs and kids wanting a party scene - tons of people around me didnt even know who was playing, they just wanted to "experience a festival."

dont get me wrong, i had an absolute blast too but i'm not sure i could drag myself back.

I had an absolute blast the 1 time I went in 07. The heat is definitely killer and there are waay too many people for me to be comfortable. But you can't help but have a great time there. Bonnaroo at night is an incredible place to be. It's gonna be hard for me to say no this year, especially if UM is playing. I live 30 miles up the road from Manchester now so all I really need to do is buy a ticket. If you can afford it, an RV would make this fest more tolerable.

I did both camp and roo in 2010, they were both a blast. If I had to choose I would go scamp any day, but at the same time you can't beat the star power that 'Roo brings every year. If UM plays, they better get a late-night set. Their '10 set was a pretty standard day-time set, good playing, but no improv that I can remember.

The only time I went to Roo was in '07.  It was my first festie.  I had a blast and saw some killer music.  But it would take something serious to get me back there again to have to deal with the heat and stupid kids.  Not to mention the insane amount of people.  something like a RATM Reunion, UM, Cheese, and PGroove (not playing a shitty set, or course) would be the only ticket.

Even AllGood this past summer was just too much for me.  I'm much more comfortable at small grassroots type festies

Are you talking about the parking lot? As when you are in a tent on Saturday afternoon, I find I am surrounded by people there for the music that is coming from the stage. I have done four, 02, 04, 06, and 08. And have loved them all. If Umphrey's plays this year, then I hope to make it down again (another even year).

I found Hookahville and All Good to be much sketchier than Bonnaroo.

cant speak for Hookahville, but Ive been to 5 (maybe more?) All Goods and 5 Bonnaroos... in terms of sketch behavior, I really cannot distinguish between the two.  It exists in roughly the same concentration at both in my experience.

I went 05-07 > took a break > returned last year > had a blast. if the lineup holds up, we're back this year.

Article on some clues posted about Bonnaroo artists
http://www.nashvillescene.com/nashvillecream/archives/2012/01/26/bonnaroo-2012-more-rumors-predictions-and-educated-guesses

Further down they link this guy's twitter page @theinforooster, has retweeted a rumor(about the 10th one down) that UM could be getting a late night slot
http://twitter.com/TheInforooster

With the headliners of Phish, Radiohead and RHCP, plus throw in Umphrey's at one of the coveted late nite slots along with some of the other great bands being rumored to play, I think my 8 year absence from the roo will come to an end.  This would just be madness.

Man, I sort of disagree.  I agree that any festival is going to bring about sketchballs, but to me, roo is hands down more eclectic, and more all-age friendly than camp.  Roo consistently brings a line-up with so much to offer so many groups of people.  You definitely have your trance stuff for people rolling their balls off, but you also have bands like bruce springsteen, bb king, neil young, etc etc for people looking to generally rock out.

At camp this past summer, I found myself thinking, "I'm too old for this shit." (I'm 32 by the way)  But just countless amounts of high school/college kids not being able to handle themselves, thinking skrillex was the greatest thing known to man.

lol at HS kids losing it to skrillex.  i remember having similar feelings of "what the hells going on here" at that afternoon set.  and yes for sure, roo does a good job of bringing a wide range of artists.  moving away from a more "jamband" format was definitely a conscious change they made starting around '05 to keep up numbers, and i think thats cool.

Are you talking about the parking lot? As when you are in a tent on Saturday afternoon, I find I am surrounded by people there for the music that is coming from the stage. and yeah, I'm not talking about when i'm actually at a stage and theres music.  what i meant is that around the campsites or festival ground i feel like theres a disproportionately high number of kids there just to get fucked out of their heads, hustle droogs, or feel cool that they're part of some scene.

maybe I should have qualified all this by first saying I'm just one dude and this is all just one dude's experience but compared to every other fest i've enjoyed, which is a pretty decent amount, i've noticed the community vibe to be lacking in a major way.  also - again i've had a friggin blast at every roo i've attended (first UM show was bonnaroo 04).
