Are you saying that the actual members of the band aren't the ones responsible for "pushing boundaries?"  because i completely disagree. It's the reason i love this band, and JW had nothing to do with that... his lights are prrrrty but you're definitely assigning credit where it is due elsewhere

I just realized that there are two JW's. Along with two JC's.

5) MVP (band member)
waful (he keeps getting better)

all of the individual members of the band are great. i wont deny that. but waful is the one who keeps pushing boundaries. its absurd to watch what budney was doing, and then skip ahead a year and see how much better waful was at his job. and then two more years, and its hard to say that there is any LD better. (aside from the dude who did NIN's lights.

agreed 100%

exactly why I put all those facepalms.  I'm paying money for a ticket to see/hear music, performed by musicians.  not to watch lights

edit: and i'm not taking anything away from Waful, as he is truly a mastermind and that DEFINITELY adds to the awesomeness of a live performance, but i wouldn't consider him a "band member".

my point is, we all know jake can shred a guitar, we all know stasik holds down basslines like it's no one business, and we all know andy doesnt do anything but taxes and roll doobies ;), but what waful does is keep pushing the performance further. his ability to read the bands movements and transfer that to a moving campus is the most impressive thing i've seen the band do this year. the way his lights worked off the environment of red rocks, or the river in des moines impresses me more than a jake solo. not to take anything away from the members of the band, obviously i love them immensely, but i feel like waful is an integral and ever improving cog in the monster that is UM...

 just my opinion.

umphrey's mcgee... you know, the actual band... those guys are "doing things we haven't seen"

Waful is great, and his setup is (.Y.) but CK5 does the same thing he does... umphrey's was "doing things we haven't seen" even when waful was doing lights for moe.

Also, I think that he's talking about how Waful adds the missing dynamic that wasnt there when budney was doing lights. Waful is innovate when he is working with the music, and he works the lights in time with the music adding a visual percussive. It helps to emphasize the music to the crowd.

They get  the rhythm and beats more when the lights pulsate along with them. When the crowd gets it more, they respond to it more, when the crowd responds more then band responds to them. The band responds to them and takes the music to another level. Another level is achieved by the band, Waful takes note, and the cycle repeats.

Ive definitely noticed crowds as a whole responding a lot more to every aspect of the show (subtleties in music, lights, etc) with waful behind the rig, and responding specifically to what waful was doing at times, and not the music he was doing it too. Obviously 98% of the crowds energy is based off the band, but to say that Waful isnt able to provide a spark in the crowd similar to how the band can is just wrong (imo).
