What do you play? Instrument / Gear ?
« on: September 05, 2010, 10:44:54 PM »

I play mostly guitar and some limited piano/keys.  I can play percussion, but not behind a kit.  I also have a sampler/resampler I've been messing with lately, an  Ensoniq ASR-X.  I was lucky to get an old hand me down piano from my Mom's house so I've been loving that lately, however it needs some tuning.

Guitar rig:

Ibanez RG EXQM1 with the quilted maple top>
Boss Blues Driver>
Boss Compressor>
Cry Baby Wah>
Marshall Regerator>
Boss DD-7>
Boss RC-20>
Marshall mg50dfx

Until it was all stolen:

Guitars:
Fender USA Strat (lefty)
Gibson USA-1 (converted)

Pedals:
Vox Real Mccoy Wah
Boss CS-2 Compressor
Homebrew Electronics Overdrive
Boss DS-1
MXR Phase 90
Line 6 FM-4 Filter Mod
Visual Sound H20 Echo
Boss DD-3 Delay

Amp:
Fender "The Twin" (essentially a Twin Reverb with 135 watts, and a half power switch)

Some shithead decided that he wanted this gear more than I did one night, when he broke into my apartment and managed to steal it all, except for this shitty little practice amp that was sitting next to all of this shit.

Now I play...

Fender mexi strat (lefty)
Marshall DFX 100.

Definitely looking to upgrade to a tube amp soon. The only fun part of starting over from the ground up is well....getting to start over from the ground up.

You guys are really packing some nice gear!
I would absolutely love to hear some music if any of you've recorded.

I feel totally out of the loop and actually odd...
but I play one of these bad boys.

I can play pedal harp but I own a full Celtic harp.

I fool around with a lot of other instruments (piano, drums, bass, guitar),
but this is my main instrument and really the only one I would consider that I 'play'.

As far as gear goes, harps don't require much.
However, I do have a Fender Princeton (Blackface) Amp.
(With harps, the sound is extremely sensitive and often powerful on its own, so the right amps are small ones).

I mostly play acoustic so I recently got a Taylor 214ce, and it's absolutely beautiful, I'm in love.

Bass:

cheap acoustic bass

5 string fender jazz bass

and last but not least, I love my harmonicas the most, too many to list.

I started learning music on piano.  Then I picked up sax in elementary school with the school band.  I started playing guitar freshman year of high school and that slowly became my "main" instrument.  I can also play drums but that's still a development in the works since I've never actually owned a drum set; I've just had tons of friends and roommates that have had them.

Guitars:

Carvin SC90T
Carvin Bolt-T (built from the build-your-own kit)
Ibanez Artcore (looking to sell this)
Schecter Tempest Custom (looking to sell this, too)
Seagull acoustic

Amps:

'66 Fender Vibro Champ
Fender Hot Rod DeVille

Pedalboard:

Electro-Harmonix POG >
Dunlop Crybaby 535Q >
Digitech Whammy 2 >
Clark Gainster >
Marshall Guv'nor >
Digitech Hardwire SC-2 >
Boss BF-3 >
Boss TR-2 >
Line 6 DL4

Keyboards:

Yamaha MM6
microKORG

'92 Fender USA Telecaster (my most favorite sounding guitar ever made)
'83 Gibson Les Paul

I use run-of-the mill Peavey amps, which is a travesty, but I don't play guitar all that often or that well.  My pops is a slasher though, so I've grown up around great equipment.  His guitar collection makes me ponder burglary.

I also play the shit out of a saxa-boom

have no fear, it will be fully documented... Jordan McConnell is the guy that built the customs for The Avett Brothers, meaning: all signs point to EPCOT.

Mostly a latin percussionist, which means I usually bring a lot of gear around...

Pearl Bobby Allende bongos
LP Matador Congo & Quinto (if you play three, the third is the tumbao)
LP Salsa Cowbell (both mountable and handheld)
LP Brass Tambourine (both mountable and a handheld which is wrapped with an ace bandage and played on my ankle)
LP Guiro Block
LP Rock Block
LP Two Octave Chimes
LP Soft Shakers
LP Maracas
LP Claves
LP Super Guiro
LP Afuche Cabasa

But the bad boy that I've been playing the most lately is this thing:

LP Angled Cajon -- using the aforementioned tambourine, I can basically make all of the sounds of a drum kit at 1/3 the volume and 1/8 the space.

When I do play a drum kit, it's a Yamaha Maple Custom with traditional jazz sized shells.  22" K Custom Dark Ride, a 21" Sabian HH unlathed ride and a 19" K Custom Dry with rivets, used as a crash.  My newest addition is a Sabian 16" Ozone, and I love that cymbal.

Those Cajones are suuuper cool! I saw a lot of street performers in Europe playing them. They can make soooo many sounds at a fraction of the cost to lug around a set.

Everyone on here plays some pretty nice equipment... I played a garbage entry-level Ibanez for a while, but a year ago this month I got a Taylor 214ce, which someone else already mentioned they had recently bought and loved.

Its such a great guitar! I love it, but I wish I would have paid $500 more and gotten the 300-series, mostly because it's a fully wooden guitar and has the full expression system. But I have NO complaints at all with the 214, the highs and mids are just soooo gorgeous coming out of it!

On a semi-related note:
I am hard-of-hearing and have always played my instruments LOUD. I grew up playing percussion in the school bands as well as with friends and everyone always tells me I play too loud. Part of it is my own hearing deficiencies, however I also have a hard time controlling myself-- I'd rather close my eyes and lose it! This being said... I've noticed the section of wood just below the sound hole that is uncovered by the pick guard is taking some serious beating! I've only had my Taylor for a year and I wonder how many more years this section will last. As I said, I play loud and hit the strings hard, which I think is what is contributing to this problem..... but I'm not sure. Has anyone had similar problems with this area of the guitar? Is there anything I can do besides change my playing style? Is it unheard of to get a pick guard that would cover that 3-centimeter between the bottom of the sound hole and where the guard currently begins?

Is this even something I should be wasting my energy on?

That part is really messed up on my acoustic, too.  That stuff just happens.  But the fact that you've only had it for a year and it's already taking a "serious beating" shows that may be playing with more wrist and less forearm.

dude, I honestly doubt you could play any harder than I do. All my acoustics get severe wear & tear in that area. it happens... wouldnt waste my time worrying about it.

Ok, good. I'll just not worry about it! Hopefully when the time comes that it's too beaten up to be played I'll have some money to buy another one...

Wrist vs. forearm eh? I've never had any formal training, I took a 100-level guitar class in my undergrad, but the wrist is bad?

I missed typing in a word in that post.  I meant you should play with more wrist and less forearm.  You can be a lot more dynamic and possess much more finesse in your playing.

Just listened to your Plunger cover on the other UM board... digglebop or whatever, very very solid work man! Are you flat-picking the whole thing? It sounded really great, and as you said, UM songs are soooo difficult to learn. I haven't even attempted because I don't think I'm anywhere near ready to try.
