SOTY 2019
« on: February 20, 2019, 07:50:31 PM »

I have listened to everything through Brooklyn and my leader in the clubhouse is New Haven (by a pretty wide margin). Lots of improv and it is all quality. Some great shows already throughout the first 6 weeks of the year. Awesome time to be seeing/listening to UM.

Edit:  leaders in the clubhouse so far...

1/25/19 Milwaukee, WI
1/31/19 New Haven, CT
2/15/19 Brooklyn, NY
2/16/19 Brooklyn, NY
3/21/19 Jim Thorpe, PA
3/29/19 Nashville, TN

For my tastes, either of the first two nights of Brooklyn beat our New Haven by just a hair. New Haven might be more consistent than either (easily more so than BkN1) but the highs of either Brooklyn show outclass New Haven, which past the Robot and maybe Virtue doesnít have much I find myself coming back to. Night 1 of Brooklyn has Blue Echo, 1348 and Ringo that are all top notch (and for my tastes the Bridgeless is really good). Night 2 has Plunger, Bad Friday and to a lesser extend Red Tape and Little Gift.

Milwaukee N1 is another obvious contender

IMO:

1/25
1/31
2/16

Those are my favs, hon mention to 1/26 and 2/15.  But really any of the past 8 shows (except Albany) are good choices.

Truth. What a start to the year. And I thought last year's winTER was great.

I'm still going with New Haven.....for now. Really it's all about that 2nd set. Straight fire. The first set isn't great but the Slacker and DBK pull it into good enough territory.

I want to listen to the Brooklyn run some more but 2/16 is definitely my favorite of the run. Mantis is a legit JOTY contender, then CW2, HBB, Attachments, and Puppet > 3x > Puppet are all awesome. Its the most complete show of the BK run and probably more complete than New Haven. Just hard for me to write off that 2nd set......

1/31
2/16
2/2

Are my picks.

Also, the Jam Cruise sets are pretty great. 1/16 in particular

This is how I'm feeling as well. Got through all BK shows this week and I keep coming back to the Saturday highlights. Really enjoy New Haven too. Top two so far:

2/16
1/31

Need to go back and relisten to the MKE shows but I remember 1/25 being outstanding so that will probably round out my top three

The show I keep coming back to is 2/14. Despite being a 15 song show, there are 4 huge songs here in Blue Echo, Ringo, 1348 and Bridgeless. Out of any show this year, it's got the most replay value so far IMO.

I haven't listened to a lot of other shows this year to declare it SOTY but I'll suggest 3/9 Seattle for consideration.

Great song selection, varied and quality improv in Jimmy, Conduit, Draco, Junk, Booth, and IC. The only nitpicks about this show for me are the TLS jam in rocker2 and that the Floor got played instead of fancy reprise.

Still New Haven for me. Some quality contenders though.

2/15 still king. Plunger > T&D, Bad Friday, Red Tape, Little Gift...

I feel like 2.22 is super underrated in this discussion.  That is a really consistent show and while it lacks two or three JOTY quality jams, every piece of improv is good and the song selection is way better than 1.31 and 2.15.

New Haven is great but the first set leaves a lot to be desired IMO.  Second set is fire for sure, the trio of huge peaking jams in RW, Higgins, and Virtue is pure locked in UM.

I'd feel a little more comfortable saying New Haven if the standalone DBK was a bit stronger.  The Slacker in S1 is great and a big DBK in theory is enough to make up for the meh song selection otherwise, but it's just not that noteworthy of a version and makes the show feel a bit less complete overall.  But the second set is so damn good it's still in contention for SOTY.

They could've played 9 No Diablos in a row in the first set and a standard Little Gift encore and I would still say 1/31 SOTY. I do think 2/16 and 3/9 are more complete shows though...hence the tough competition.

I liked New Haven a lot but would still take 2/15 over it in a heartbeat, and I also come back to 2/14 way more than New Haven. Robot World is great but it's about the only thing I ever come back to. Slacker and Virtue are the next best jams and neither of them are jams that have me wanting to listen back much.

Oh yeah, and that Slacker jam in the first set is fire. New Haven. Case closed.

Any chance the OP can contain a list of agreed upon front runners? After reading through this, it looks like 1/31, 2/15, and 2/16 are the leaders of the pack?

1/25 should 100% be on the shortlist.
