I have probably listened to 11/2 more but objectively Iíd say 1/27 is a better overall show. For me 11/2 drags a little in the middle of the 2nd set while 1/27 has that glorious August and massive MO in the middle.

1/27/11- great American was absolute fire (highlight of the show), the intro to gitv was fantastic, resolution was solid. All in time 2nd set had a great jam, much obliged >ait was done well. Conduit was finally opened up. Come closer was unexpected. August had a beautiful uplifting jam w/ a Pink Floyd tease in the intro and finally front porch>hysteria>front porch was a repeat encore from 2006 lupoís in providence, but it capped off a great night after a brutal snow storm in Boston. I give this show a solid A

FWIW in a recent "Joel's favorite shows" list 11/2 made the cut while 1/27 didn't.

Great thread - given how close the votes are (16-14 in favor 11/2/11) shows its a hard one. I'm more familiar with 11/2, so I had to give 1/27 a listen again to refresh myself. That first set is molten. Had to give the edge to 11/2 for the same reason Andrusy did - I like the jams better. But it's fucking close.

That said, 1/30 at Ram's Head Set II might be my favorite set of 2011. WBG, Hey 19 > Midnight Hour/Funkytown > Phil's > Love Supreme > Blecho > Ambient Jam > Phil's shows off UM in full glory. If a noob needed one set to see why I see UM over other jam bands, I'd show them this one. Fucking heavy, which most other bands in the scene won't touch, absolutely amazing, tight covers, and moments of absolute beauty.

Sorry for the tangent. LMS is a fucking awesome jam out of 11/2.

I heard they give the 5 for 20 deals when UM plays Upward though

11/2 grooves a little more. It's got a lot of Jake funky pocket playing, especially in the DBK, BL, LMS. GYM (RH) is probably the most proggy jam (one of the best jams of the show imo). 1/27 is more of a classic UM show. It's loose but leans a little more on the prog side and has more of a variety of styles. There's no break in fire improv  in that show. Will say that LMS in 11/2 is one of my favorite jams. Too bad it was in a small shitty venue. Would have loved to see that pulled off on a big stage with a full light rig and better PA and everything.

Ben and I were at both. I would have to give the edge to 1/27 as its my favorite show of all time. 11/2 is top 10 though.

I go back and forth. They're both crazy consistent. I usually give the edge to 1/27 because of the sheer amount of amazing improv. 1/27 AIT > 11/2 DBK which basically makes it for me. Although the 11/2 BLBC is one of my favorite jams of all time

JEEEEZ that's tough. I was at 1/27 and it was my dad and brother's first UM show, boy did they get lucky. With a gun to my head I'd say 1/27 because 11/2 is just kinda "standard great" during the middle 2nd set. They both have absolutely bonkers encores, of which 11/2 is better, but I love the slow build of the Front Porch too and segue into Hysteria. 1/27 1st set is molten fire, I don't care if there was a repeated progression in there or whatever- the only let up is Passing and I ain't even gonna complain about that. Would also like to point out the ending GA solo is 10/10 of Myers animalistic drumming, I've never heard better in that song. The whole ending bit of Reso is one of my favorite UM jams of all time the way they all lock in.

That first GA riff jam might be my fave of all time.
