All in all, a pretty good show.  The first set had some really good improv.  Bottom 1/2, 2x2, and Mulche's had short 3-5 minute jams but they were pretty damn fantastic.  In response to porkfritter, I thought the 2x2 jam was actually quite dirty.  Haven't listened again, though.  It was nice to see a standalone JaJunk and the jam was fire.

Second set wasn't quite up to the standards set in the 1st; not much improv, though the August jam was gorgeous.  Roundabout made up for the lack of improv, though.  Absolutely incredible moment.  The build-up in Mantis (the part before the final vocal section) was extended before dropping into Hangover.  Even though you had to know the end was coming, it was pretty surprising after Fussy.  That set must've been brutal for BB.  Mantis, August, Roundabout, Floor?  I'm surprised at how well he handled Roundabout, though.

Must-hear: Bottom Half, 2x2, JaJunk, Roundabout, August

I've been to so many shows were there were Roundabout teases, glad they finally played it but kinda sad I missed it too. Excited to listen to this one. I love nights were Bayliss solos alot and is totally on.

Have a good night tonight everyone! Really wish I could be there, but I won't be sitting at home- I won tickets to Family Groove Company in Davenport, Iowa from Summer Camp so at least I'll be grooving to some live music too!

I think this show topped the first night overall.  Improv was more solid throughout and the Roundabout cover was too sick.  I have always been pretty apprehensive about them covering Yes due to the vocals but Bayliss handled them well.  There was a jam in Hangover, not totally sure but I think it was One Nation Under A Groove.

There was a jam in Hangover, not totally sure but I think it was One Nation Under A Groove.

Definitely a One Nation Under A Groove jam in Hangover.

The 1st set had some serious momentum and energy going after the Prowler > Bottom, 2x2, JaJunk segment.  I really enjoyed the improv in set one even though most of it was shorter (except for JaJunk).  Watching Joel's dad's "Air-Keys" during the end of JaJunk was awesome, he was pumping up the crowd while the other old man crushed it on stage. Apeman really sucked some energy out of the room and I thought it was a strange spot for it, but Mulche's ended things on a high note.

The 2nd set doesn't stack up to the 1st as far as improv goes, but it was executed very well.  The turbo Mantis before the drop to Hangover was ridiculous, don't think I've heard that before.  ROUNDABOUT!  Can't believe they finally busted this out after so many teases.  They did a very good job with it too, Bayliss was admirable on vocals, and the harmonizing was great, Kris especially.  Snucka was fun, nothing out of the ordinary for a Snucka jam though.  There was a pause before they started August, and I saw someone post about the August jam being reminiscent of 6/30 N2F.  I too thought this at the show, although it doesn't sound identical it has a similar feel.  I don't care for Gulf Stream at all so that was a bit of a mid-set yawner for me.   Dutchman is always welcome, and Bayliss was on point with his solo.  Right as they finished Fussy the burst into the end of Mantis.  As "on a dime" as you can get.  Thought this would be the end of the set but The Floor was a welcome closer.  I feel like I hear this song at every show I go to, but it never gets old.  I hope it makes it on the DVD, because it is one of UM's strongest straight up rockers.

Encore was fun, Reso had a short glorious sounding jam in the first section, and some dark funk in section two before Jake took a solo that signaled Snucka III.  Jake was really having fun hitting some heavy metal riffs in the solo, while Pony got on his knees in front of his guitar.  Overall, a very strong show, I'm glad I was there for this one.

Everyone have a blast tonight and be safe!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to hearing this one again.  Details have been known to change after repeated listenings.  Maybe I'll run into ya later on, I'll be raging balcony.  Have a monstah show!

Jajunk was absolutely the highlight of set one.  And although the improv wasn't flowing as freely in set 2, the song selection was just outstanding for my tastes with songs like August (great jam), Fussy and The Floor rounding out the set.  Can't say enough about the Roundabout - such a treat to be able to see it live.  As soon as Stasik commented on how many requests the next cover had gotten I turned to my bro and called it. Lots of fun.

Heading into the city now!

They spoiled me yesterday by having the 12/29 show up by 2 p.m. Not looking good for the 12/30 show as it's not up yet. Really wanted to listen to it tonight since I can't be there.

ETA: 12/30 is up now, perfect setbreak music for me and the wife during the Phish stream. Technology sure keeps New Year's fun when you have a 5 and 2 year old.

I think there are issues with you player, or the download -- or are these the physical discs? The downloads sound fine to me.

Here's a clip of the back end of 2x2. Best part is in the last cpl seconds some guys made a 6-fist rawker salute - pretty sick!

Jajunk and Roundabout, FTW!!  I had a blast at this show, and the whole run.  The balcony was a heat box tho, especially on the 30th, but I think that actually added to some of the fun.  We were getting rowdy.

Setlist I got was as follows...

Nodding off>sleep>deeep sleep>deeper sleep*

Passed out>epic pillow love>snuggie'd

The sandman strikes again

*snoring and drooling teases

Yep that's right totally slept through the show this night. Not too proud of it but worse things have happened and in the end had I even made it to the doors there's no way I would have gotten in. Stupac'd.

I originally said I thought this show was better than the first night, but after relistening they are fairly even.  Neither set meets the first set of 12/29, but taking both sets into account it is more consistent.  Prowler is always a great opener and the Bottom Half has a really nice uplifting jam.  As already stated many times, the JaJunk is pure fire and I believe it's the first standalone JaJunk I've seen.  I also enjoyed the 2x2 and Mulche's jams.

The first half of Mantis goes into turbo drive like the Red Rocks version before dropping into Hangover.  Hangover has a fairly standard funk jam with One Nation Under A Groove.  The following Roundabout, however, may be my favorite cover from the run.  Well executed all around and I am pleasantly surprised with the vocals.  The Snucka has a decent jam, but it's a bit short.  The August might be the only real noteworthy piece of improv in the set.  Fussy has a nice unexpected drop back into Mantis.  Reso has some solid improv and I was quite happy they ended Snucka rather than leaving it unfinished.

In my opinion this show was pure fire start to finish.  IMO both sets on 12/30 were better than 12/29 and it was not really even close.

Highlights were Bottom 1/2, JaJunk, Hangover, ROUNDABOUT!!![/size], and Fussy Dutchman.

Did I mention ROUNDABOUT?!?! ftw indeed!

This show is pretty damn good upon re-listening.  Didn't think this one would hold up as well on tape.  This was the only show of the run that I attended, but it was a lot better than 12.30 last year.

Prowler > Bottom Half is a nice opener a la Fayetteville.  This version of Bottom Half has a powerful, uplifting peak though I think I prefer the more subdued 9.26 version.  I actually prefer this version of 2x2 to the much longer one played on 12.30 of 2009.  This is actually my favorite piece of improv from the entire show; I love the ominous drive created by the Taurus pedal riff and the relaxed melodicism from the lovely playing by Jake and BB.  The JaJunk jam is the only extended improv from the show but it speaks for itself.  Starts as a nice funky, in-the-pocket groove before gaining steam and peaking really fucking hard for a few minutes.  I think the transition back into JaJunk is almost botched but they save it and turn it into a nice segue.

This rendition of Mantis has to be up there with the 7.3.10 version (and some others) as one of the best, as well.  BB's vocals sound surprisingly on-pitch.  And that build-up section is about twice as long as usual and turns into a careening, out-of-control fury that they bring to a screeching halt before Hangover.  The crowd reaction as Hangover starts is pretty awesome on the audience recordings.  Roundabout is surprisingly good on tape.

Jajunk might be one of my favorite jams of the year. That peak is out of control.  Its like they were just punching the crowd in the face over and over again.

Reminiscent of 7.17 Girlfriend is Better.  That one is more of a dance party jam but really the peaks on both of those are remarkably similar.  Guitar-driven, extended, peaks that just seem to keep going on forever.
